DJI Mini 2 Review and Buying Guide
Compact design and takeoff weight
DJI lists the Mini 2 at under 249 g takeoff weight, with the battery, propellers and microSD card included in the stated configuration. Its arms fold for transport, making it easy to pack for trips. Weight alone does not determine the rules that apply: registration, remote-pilot and operating requirements vary by country and can depend on where and how the drone is flown. Check your local aviation authority before flying.
Camera and video quality
The Mini 2 uses a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with 12 MP effective pixels and a 24 mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens. It records up to 4K at 30fps, 2.7K at up to 60fps and Full HD at up to 60fps. The camera supports JPEG and DNG (RAW) photos, which gives photographers more flexibility when editing still images. Video is recorded in MP4 using H.264, with a maximum bitrate of 100 Mbps.
A 3-axis mechanical gimbal helps keep footage stable. The camera does not offer the larger sensor or higher frame-rate options found on newer models, and it does not support portrait-oriented camera rotation. Buyers who regularly create vertical social-media videos should consider whether cropping landscape footage will meet their needs.
Flight time, flight distance and video transmission
DJI rates the Mini 2 for up to 31 minutes of flight time in a windless test while flying at 4.7 m/s. Actual usable flight time will be shorter or vary with wind, temperature, battery age, flight speed and the reserve needed to return safely.
DJI lists a maximum flight distance of 15.7 km. Separately, the OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system is rated for up to 10 km under FCC conditions and 6 km under CE, SRRC and MIC conditions, in an unobstructed, interference-free environment. Flight distance and video transmission distance are different measurements. Neither is a recommended operating distance; maintain the legally required visual line of sight and follow local rules.
Positioning and obstacle sensing
The Mini 2 has a downward vision system and infrared sensing for hovering and positioning close to the ground. It does not have forward, backward, upward or side obstacle-avoidance sensors. Pilots must keep clear of trees, wires, buildings and people and should not expect the aircraft to detect or avoid obstacles automatically.
Flight modes and creative features
DJI lists QuickShot modes including Dronie, Helix, Rocket, Circle and Boomerang, along with Sphere, 180-degree and wide-angle panoramas. These automated features can help create short clips and panoramic images, but the pilot remains responsible for choosing a clear flight area and monitoring the aircraft throughout the manoeuvre.
Key DJI Mini 2 specifications

- Camera: 1/2.3-inch CMOS, 12 MP
- Lens: 24 mm equivalent, f/2.8
- Maximum video: 4K/30fps
- Photo formats: JPEG and DNG (RAW)
- Gimbal: 3-axis mechanical stabilisation
- Maximum flight time: 31 minutes (windless DJI test)
- Maximum flight distance: 15.7 km (manufacturer specification)

- Obstacle sensing: downward positioning only; no forward, backward, upward or side obstacle avoidance
Who should consider the DJI Mini 2?
The Mini 2 may suit beginners and travellers who want a compact drone with 4K recording and RAW photo support. It is less suitable for pilots who need advanced obstacle avoidance, vertical camera shooting, higher-resolution sensors or more advanced tracking features. If buying a used unit, check battery health, crash history, gimbal condition, controller compatibility, firmware status and whether replacement parts and service are available.
Advantages and limitations
- Advantages: compact folding design; under-249-g manufacturer-listed takeoff weight; 4K/30fps video; RAW photo support; 3-axis gimbal; OcuSync 2.0 transmission.
- Limitations: no obstacle-avoidance sensors; modest 1/2.3-inch 12 MP camera; no 4K/60fps recording; no vertical camera rotation; rated flight time is a controlled-condition maximum.
IGIDRONE verdict
The DJI Mini 2 offers a straightforward mix of portability, 4K video and RAW photography. Its main compromise is simplicity: it lacks the obstacle sensing and newer camera features available on more recent drones. Compare its condition and price with newer Mini models, especially if you are considering a second-hand unit. Confirm the exact package contents, warranty and local flight requirements before purchasing.

Footnotes
| Footnotes | 1. The standard weight of the aircraft (including battery, propellers, and a microSD card) is 242 grams. Actual product weight may vary. Registration is not required in some countries and regions. Check local rules and regulations before use. These specifications have been determined through tests conducted with the latest firmware. Firmware updates can enhance performance, so updating to the latest firmware is highly recommended. 2. Due to local policy and regulation restrictions, the 5.8 GHz frequency band is currently banned in certain countries, including but not limited to Japan, Russia, Israel, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. Please use the 2.4 GHz frequency band when operating in these locations. Always check local rules and regulations before use, as they may change over time. 3. Maximum flight range specification is a proxy for radio link strength and resilience, not aircraft battery capability. It only refers to the maximum, one-way flight distance. Data was measured in an open environment without interference. Please pay attention to the return prompt on the DJI Fly app during actual flight. Refer to the following applicable standard in different countries and regions: FCC: United States, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Chile, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and other regions; SRRC: Mainland China; CE: UK, Russia, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Macau, New Zealand, UAE, and other regions; MIC: Japan. 4. Data is tested under different standards in open areas free of interference. It only refers to the maximum, one-way flight distance without considering Return to Home. Please pay attention to RTH prompts in the DJI Fly app during actual flight. |
