Parrot ANAFI UKR Review: ISR Drone Specifications, Range and Mission Capabilities

The Parrot ANAFI UKR is a specialised small unmanned aircraft system aimed at defence, government and public-safety organisations. It is not simply a consumer camera drone with a longer radio link: the platform combines visible and thermal imaging, several possible communication paths, GNSS-denied navigation features and a dedicated ground-control system. Its suitability depends on the exact hardware, battery, radio configuration, approvals and support package supplied.

Imaging: visible and thermal cameras

The ANAFI UKR combines electro-optical and infrared imaging. Parrot’s documentation describes visible-light imaging based on two 1/2.4-inch sensors, with wide and rectilinear views. Published still-photo resolution reaches 21 MP, while digital zoom is listed up to 35x. Digital zoom enlarges an image; it is not a 35x optical zoom lens and does not guarantee readable detail at every distance.

The thermal channel uses a FLIR Boson sensor with 640 × 512 resolution. This can be relevant to approved inspection, search and public-safety workflows where heat signatures add information that a standard RGB camera cannot provide. Thermal images require careful interpretation: emissivity, viewing angle, distance, weather, reflective surfaces and target temperature affect the result. A thermal camera does not automatically identify a person, fault or hazard.

Recording modes and frame rates differ between visible and infrared channels. Buyers should request the current recording-mode table and sample files for the exact supplied version, especially if footage must meet a client’s reporting or post-production requirements.

Flight time, batteries and aircraft weight

Battery choice changes the operating envelope. Parrot lists up to 38 minutes at 6 m/s airspeed with the standard Smart Battery and up to 70 minutes at 6.5 m/s with the XLR Smart Battery. These are configuration-specific manufacturer figures. Payload, wind, temperature, battery age, route, hovering, manoeuvres and return reserve can reduce usable mission time.

The standard-battery aircraft mass is listed at approximately 1.03 kg, while the XLR configuration is approximately 1.37 kg. Maximum take-off mass is 1.45 kg. Organisations should confirm the delivered aircraft weight with its battery, accessories and mission equipment rather than relying on an unconfigured airframe figure.

Use the standard and XLR battery figures as separate configurations. Do not combine the XLR endurance claim with the standard battery’s lower weight, or assume maximum distance and maximum endurance can be achieved on the same flight. Build a conservative reserve into every mission plan.

Connectivity and transmission: check the exact radio package

One distinguishing feature is the multiple-connectivity architecture. Parrot’s current technical information describes Wi-Fi, 5G, LoRa and MARS radio options. Its published technical specification page lists maximum transmission figures of up to 8 km for Wi-Fi and up to 55 km for MARS and LoRa, with 5G dependent on network coverage. Some radio options are version-dependent or available by special request.

These are different communication technologies and conditions, not interchangeable flight-distance figures. They are not permission to fly beyond visual line of sight. Network coverage, radio interference, antenna placement, terrain, local spectrum rules and controller configuration affect practical connectivity. Ask the supplier to identify which radios are included, optional, special-order or approved for the intended country.

Navigation, security and environmental protection

Parrot describes optical navigation for environments where GNSS signals are unavailable or unreliable, as well as indoor-flight capability. This is not a promise that every indoor or GNSS-denied environment is suitable. Lighting, texture, obstacles, airflow, sensor visibility and operator procedures remain important. Request a demonstration using a representative, authorised environment and document the operating limitations.

Parrot’s documentation describes signed firmware, storage encryption and security-related compliance claims. Organisations handling sensitive imagery should conduct their own security review: check data paths, controller and tablet configuration, update procedures, access controls, storage, export, retention and cloud or network services. A vendor security statement does not replace an organisation’s risk assessment.

IP53 indicates defined protection against dust and water spray; it does not make the aircraft waterproof or suitable for unrestricted operation in heavy rain. Follow the current manual for precipitation, temperature, battery handling, cleaning and maintenance limits.

Who should consider the ANAFI UKR?

The platform may be relevant to government, public-safety and specialist professional teams that have a defined need for combined visible and thermal imaging, multiple communication options, compact deployment and a supported operational system. It is less likely to suit a hobby pilot, holiday filmmaker or ordinary aerial-photography buyer. Those users generally do not need the specialised controller, radio options, thermal system or procurement process that shape this product.

For an inspection organisation, the key question is whether thermal and visible data meet the task’s required resolution and reporting standard. For a public-safety organisation, the complete workflow matters: training, dispatch, data governance, maintenance, battery logistics, communications and legal authority to operate. For a government buyer, supplier support, security review, configuration traceability and procurement conditions may matter as much as the aircraft’s headline specifications.

Advantages and limitations

Potential advantages

  • Combines visible and 640 × 512 thermal imaging in one compact aircraft system.
  • Offers two battery configurations with different published endurance figures.
  • Supports multiple connectivity options, subject to version and regional availability.
  • Includes navigation features intended for environments where GNSS is limited.
  • Designed as a complete professional system with a dedicated controller and mission software.

Limitations and checks

  • It is a specialised procurement product; pricing and availability may require a supplier quotation.
  • Radio options, battery configuration and some features vary by version or order. Confirm the bill of materials in writing.
  • Maximum flight time, distance and transmission range are controlled or configuration-dependent figures, not normal mission guarantees.
  • Thermal resolution and digital zoom have practical limits; request sample data for the intended task.
  • IP53 is not waterproofing, and GNSS-denied capability does not remove the need for site-specific risk assessment and training.

Alternatives and buying comparisons

Parrot ANAFI Ai: consider this professional platform when 4G connectivity, mapping workflows and software integration matter more than the ANAFI UKR’s specialist thermal and multi-radio configuration. Compare the exact camera, controller, connectivity and software requirements.

Parrot ANAFI Thermal: a legacy thermal-focused model may appear in used or remaining-stock discussions. Verify current support, battery condition, software compatibility, warranty and replacement-parts availability before considering one.

Conventional enterprise camera drones: if the organisation mainly needs visual inspection, mapping or routine documentation, a more conventional enterprise platform may be simpler to source and operate. Compare payload options, service coverage, data workflow, training and total ownership cost.

Procurement checklist

  1. Request the exact model/version, battery type, controller, tablet, radio modules, antennas, accessories and software included in the quotation.
  2. Ask which connectivity options are standard, optional, version-dependent or available only by special request.
  3. Request current official specifications, user documentation, supported recording modes and written aircraft/controller/firmware compatibility confirmation.
  4. Evaluate visible and thermal sample files against the actual task, distance, environmental conditions and reporting requirements.
  5. Confirm local service, repair turnaround, battery replacement, training, warranty and software support.
  6. Review aviation permissions, spectrum requirements, privacy, data security, procurement rules and site-specific restrictions with the relevant authorities and advisers.
  7. Calculate total cost of ownership, including batteries, charging, training, spares, insurance, maintenance, software and data management.

Regional considerations

Rules depend on the country, aircraft configuration, operator and mission. In India, check current DGCA requirements and the Digital Sky airspace map, and obtain clarification for the intended professional or government operation. In the United States, confirm the applicable FAA operating pathway, registration, Remote ID and required authorisations. In the European Union, assess the relevant EASA category and national requirements. Radio equipment, sensitive data and government procurement can involve additional rules beyond ordinary drone flight regulations.

This is general buyer information, not legal, security or procurement advice. A connectivity specification does not authorise BVLOS operations, and a product’s intended government or professional role does not create an exemption from local aviation rules.

Verdict

The Parrot ANAFI UKR is best assessed as a specialised professional aircraft system, not as a direct substitute for a consumer photography drone. Its combination of visible and thermal imaging, configurable connectivity, battery choices and navigation features may be valuable when those capabilities solve a defined operational requirement. The trade-off is a more complex procurement and support decision: confirm the exact version, radio package, battery, data workflow, training and regulatory approvals before purchase.
