DJI / DRONE PROFILE
DJI FPV
Explore the available technical information for this aircraft, including camera capabilities, flight performance and manufacturer-specific specifications.

The DJI FPV is a first-person-view drone designed for immersive flight and fast, dynamic video. It combines a 4K camera, low-latency goggles feed and three selectable flight modes, including Manual mode for experienced FPV pilots. This IGIDRONE guide uses DJI’s published information and does not claim hands-on testing.
DJI FPV Review and Buying Guide
FPV design and intended use
Unlike a conventional camera drone designed mainly for smooth aerial photography, DJI FPV is built around an immersive piloting experience using FPV goggles. Its combination of high speed, low-latency live view and Manual mode makes it a different kind of aircraft from DJI’s Mini, Air and Mavic camera-drone lines. New pilots should learn in a suitable open area and understand the controls before attempting faster manoeuvres.
Camera and video quality
The camera uses a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with 12 MP effective pixels and a wide 150-degree field of view at supported frame rates. It records up to 4K at 50/60fps and Full HD at up to 120fps. DJI lists H.264 and H.265 video, a maximum bitrate of 120 Mbps and electronic image stabilisation. The gimbal provides mechanical tilt movement, with electronic roll-axis stabilisation; it is not a conventional three-axis camera gimbal.
Flight performance and battery
DJI lists an approximate maximum flight time of 20 minutes when flying at a steady 40 km/h in windless conditions, and approximately 16 minutes maximum hovering time in a windless test. Maximum flight distance is listed as 16.8 km in windless conditions. These are manufacturer test values, not practical flight targets. High-speed flying, wind, temperature, battery condition and a safe return reserve affect actual flight time.
The aircraft weighs approximately 795 g. DJI specifies a maximum horizontal speed of 27 m/s in S mode and up to 39 m/s in M mode (27 m/s in Mainland China). These speeds demand substantial space, experience and careful attention to local regulations.
Transmission and goggles
The DJI FPV system uses DJI O3 transmission. DJI lists a maximum video transmission distance of 10 km under FCC conditions and 6 km under CE, SRRC and MIC conditions in an unobstructed environment. This is separate from the 16.8 km maximum flight-distance test figure. Neither number is a recommended flight distance. Radio rules, interference and terrain affect the real connection, and pilots must follow applicable visual-line-of-sight and observer requirements.
The original DJI FPV package was designed around DJI FPV Goggles V2 and the dedicated remote controller. Check the exact bundle and compatibility of any used or replacement equipment before purchase, as package contents and availability can differ.
Obstacle sensing: an important limitation
DJI FPV has forward and downward vision sensing, but it does not provide omnidirectional obstacle avoidance. DJI states that forward obstacle sensing is available in N mode only; the system can warn and slow the aircraft, but it does not automatically brake and steer around obstacles like a full obstacle-avoidance camera drone. In S and M modes, pilots must not expect the vision system to protect them from obstacles. Maintain a clear flight path and do not rely on sensors as a substitute for pilot control.
Key DJI FPV specifications
- Takeoff weight: approximately 795 g
- Camera: 1/2.3-inch CMOS, 12 MP
- Lens: 150° FOV at supported frame rates; f/2.8
- Maximum video: 4K/60fps; Full HD up to 120fps
- Stabilisation: single-axis mechanical tilt with electronic roll stabilisation
- Maximum flight time: approximately 20 minutes (DJI test)
- Maximum hovering time: approximately 16 minutes (DJI test)
- Maximum flight distance: 16.8 km (windless test)
- Video transmission: DJI O3; up to 10 km FCC / 6 km CE, SRRC and MIC
- Obstacle sensing: forward and downward; limited assistance in N mode, no omnidirectional avoidance
- GNSS: GPS, GLONASS and Galileo
Who should consider DJI FPV?
DJI FPV may suit experienced pilots and creators who specifically want immersive FPV flight and dynamic moving footage. It is not the simplest choice for someone who mainly wants relaxed photography, automated tracking or comprehensive obstacle sensing. Beginners should practise in a safe, open environment and consider professional instruction before using Manual mode.
Advantages and limitations
- Advantages: immersive goggles-based flight; 4K/60fps video; low-latency FPV feed; high-speed flight modes; forward and downward vision sensing in supported conditions.
- Limitations: no omnidirectional obstacle avoidance; high speed requires skill and space; approximately 20-minute rated maximum flight time; heavier than Mini-series drones; goggles-based operation may not suit every use case.
IGIDRONE verdict
DJI FPV is a specialised choice for immersive flying rather than an all-purpose camera drone. Its speed and goggles experience are the main attractions, while its limited sensing and demanding flight characteristics are important trade-offs. Before buying, check the aircraft, goggles, controller, batteries, charger, condition, firmware compatibility and local operating rules.
